Everyone deserves to feel safe and respected in their own home. For Denise, however, that sense of peace was shattered when a simple conversation with her 28-year-old stepdaughter turned into a life-altering discovery. Denise only wanted fairness—asking for rent from an adult still living under her roof—but what followed left her feeling shocked and betrayed.
Denise’s letter:
Hi,
My 28-year-old stepdaughter still lives with us and refuses to leave. I’m not her personal maid, so I asked her to start paying rent. Her reaction stunned me—she yelled, “You don’t own this house! You’re the outsider here!”
To make matters worse, my husband stood there and said nothing.
The next day, two men showed up at my door. They were lawyers, sent by my stepdaughter. They handed me official papers that proved the home I live in is legally owned by her. She has the right to evict me at any moment.
I was speechless. All this time, I believed the house would eventually go to her after my husband and I passed, since she’s his only child. But I had no idea that he had already transferred the ownership to her.
