I’m 74, and I have always loved wearing high heels. They make me feel stylish and elegant and give me a sense of confidence. Yesterday, I was getting ready to go out and put on my favorite pair of heels. When my son saw me in them, he frowned and said, “Mom, you look foolish wearing high heels at your age. It’s dangerous and completely unnecessary.”
His comment stung. He went on to explain that wearing high heels could cause me to fall and hurt myself and that, at my age, I should prioritize comfort and safety over fashion. While I understand his concern for my well-being, his harsh words left me feeling hurt and unsure about my choices.
Now, I’m left questioning whether he might be right. Should I be more practical with my footwear choices, or should I continue to wear what makes me feel happy and confident? The high heels are more than just shoes to me; they are a part of my identity and how I express myself.
Has anyone else faced similar comments from their family or loved ones? How did you handle it? Should I stop wearing heels to avoid conflict and potential risks, or should I stand my ground and keep enjoying the things that bring me joy, even if they come with a bit of criticism?
